The Columbia women just defeated a pretty good Ohio University team by a 92-74 score in an away game in Ohio to improve to 2-0 on the year. Everyone on the Columbia bench appeared to have had some playing time today as the Lions overcame Ohio’s early lead. This year’s Columbia team is obviously very deep and talented.
Did any bench players stand out?
I liked a lot Broom’s game. She was not super inspired scoring wise (5pt, 1/5 FG, 1-3 3PT), but our offense started working the first time she stepped in the game. She was everywhere while on the floor with 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Note also one of the classic bench games from Arrebola, 3-6 3PT.
In general, very good offensive game for the team, even when Weiss was not being able to score. Weiss, Page and Rafiu are set to be the three important players this season. Rafiu had a very good game today, more consistent on both ends of the floor than on friday. Great showup from Avlijas, I wish she is able to find consistency throughout the year. Shootout to the FT shooting today, 26-30 (86%), miles away from what was the usual last season. This might be one of the key points of this season together with rebounding (49 vs 24 in rebounds today)
I guess we don’t call Mia Broom a bench player, but she doesn’t start (yet) - hit the big 3 in OT against Butler, and today 5 assists and 10 (!) rebounds
3 3-pointers for Arrebola, who didn’t play at all in the Butler game. Lots of options on this team
Hey Kreeeker, I guess we watched the same game ![]()
The two “A’s,'‘ Marija Avlijas and Maria Arrebola, have both been impressive so far this season. Avlijas has upped her game considerably from last year doing everything much better. She is very fast, tough and smart. Maria Arrebola is a deadly three point shooter who along with Broom and of course, Weiss, gives Columbia a deadly trio of outside shooters. She’s also much taller than our other guards which certainly is another significant plus. Incidentally, it looks like we have some great depth at the guard position, with Riley, Fliss, all of the forementioned, Simmons and the freshman point guard from Greece.
Great points Kreeker, particularly the improvement in our free throw shooting compared to last year.
