Game Thread: Yale III (ILT Semis)

It’s a bummer, but we had our chances. Even after that missed call, Poulakidas had a brain fart shotclock TO on his final possession, leading to final good look from Lee.

An ugly, forgettable game for both teams, but Yale moves on. Lee and Pierce can come back for another year, but it’s gonna be a long summer and fall.

Princeton will be in good shape with Lee and Pierce coming back next year and outstanding talent matriculating.

Yale has a more uncertain future with its seniors leaving after this year, so we hope that the Bulldogs get a third trip to the dance in the last four seasons before we have to contemplate a Mbeng and Poulakidas-less squad.

As I said, you would expect Yale to shoot more
free throws, but that differential is extraordinary.
when Pierce and Davis went to the basket, they
did not get the calls Townsend did.
Carroll always talkedd about the need to make sure
your stars got the same respect as the opponent’s.
That has not been true this year. Part of it is style
of play, but part may also be working the officials.
My point is not that Yale should not have won,
They have been good and consistent all year.
I am saying Princeton needs to prioritize getting to the line
next year.

Right, I get your point and understand Yale plays with more physicality. I agree JJ’s premier brand of basketball lets players get away with more physical acts like body checking, man-handling, etc.

However, the difference in three points attempted (35 to 15) is even greater than the extraordinary difference in FTs attempted (15), and Princeton attempts a lot of mid range jumpers. Not only is Princeton physically weak on the glass, but they attempt majority jumpers. Not much the refs can do when Yale works the paint harder, but I would agree that P needs to prioritize getting to the line.

Just saw Yale’s post-game presser. Somehow I missed the obligatory part where Jones congratulates his opponent and their coach for a great game.

So what is your point in broaching the issue of free throw differential, if not to cast doubt on the integrity of the officiating?

I think I explained it.
Sorry if it is over your head.

Thanks for not bringing up the “two professional players” bit.

With Cornell comfortably putting Dartmouth away, I feel less pained about this loss.

As tough as Yale is, Cornell is our matchup kryptonite. No way a tired Tiger squad was beating an in-the-groove Big Red squad tomorrow.

Local:
Your clear implication was that - because Yale attempted 18 free throws and Princeton 3 and as Yale was assessed 9 personal fouls and Princeton 17 - that the three assigned referees (two white, non-Hispanic males and a white Hispanic male) cheated Princeton out of victory earlier today in Providence. Would that not serve as an accurate summation of your explanation?

Admittedly, I’m uninformed on any NIL policies or activity within the Ivy League, so I’m not offering any views except those on IL hoops.

No. I don’t know if you are just trolling or really are this
stupid. Either way, interacting with you is tiresome.

No, sir; you’re undoubtedly implying the officials cheated Princeton earlier today. That’s a statement on the event’s integrity or lack thereof and I insist that you take ownership of it, as any real man would - bad enough you’re not putting your name to it.

Just mute him. A lot of the other Yale posters already have.

That’s one option - not the best; nor the most honorable.

“Gotta blame the coach on that one,” Henderson commented. “[Huggins] was really helpful all season, and you know, it was my decision at certain times to not play him but he was terrific when he did [play].”

“I always try to be prepared mentally for a game like this,” Huggins told The Daily Princetonian’. “Whenever your number gets called you got to be ready.”

The center roulette with Huggins > Byriel > Happy was Mitch’s biggest failure this season.

Happy has the all-around talent but didn’t get any real minutes until late in the season. Huggins was the best defender but got benched at the first sign of offensive struggle. Byriel was the best shooter but was a defensive sieve.

If Huggins comes back, let him and Happy battle it out for starting center. Whoever wins the job, stick with that choice for all of non-conf before considering a switch.

Ok. Gotta chime in here. Starting Byriel from game 1 was an an obvious bad call
Three years on the team with hardly any playing time. He worked on his shot and early on made some wide open 3s in non conference play. He was just not committed to winning as his D was horrible and rebounding no better

Interesting in all these posts, no one even mentions Peters and his commitment to Princeton bb. Every team needs a floor leader and without him on the court the ball movement just isn’t the same

Why didn’t Hickey and Abdulihi play more minutes?

I also could not believe H let almost 30 seconds run off the clock. At least have have a plan to foul their worst shooter. And at the end, don’t shoot the 3 but drive to the hoop, make the basket and hope they foul you

Frustrating season

I rewatched the final 40s and Mitch was arguing the non-call on Aletan’s “block” of Caden as Mbeng brought the ball up. Mitch said he wanted them to foul, but by the time Yale got the ball across halfcourt, the only players near enough to foul were Lee and Peters, who both had 4 fouls. Can’t afford to lose them.

But in the end, it worked out for us. Got the ball back with a clean shot to win it. We weren’t getting calls at the rim and it was best to avoid OT due to foul trouble. Lee stepback 3 was the right shot - he’s made it twice before this Ivy season - it just didn’t go in this time.

Another painful ILT loss, but his year hurts less than last year. Last year’s team with Allocco and Martini could have made noise in the NCAAs. This year’s team wouldn’t have beaten Cornell on Sunday, much less a power conference team next week.

Mitch still has a lot to learn. I hope he recognizes his failures and PROPERLY develops a center for next season. Whether it’s Happy or Huggins or Landon Clark… we just need one solid option. This team played 4 on 5 all season. 3 on 5 when Pierce was hampered.

Postgame presser finally posted.

Blake breaks down in tears… heartbreaking. He can hold his head up high - that Sweet 16 run was an all-time program moment and it wouldn’t have happened without him and his epic performance against Missouri.

Plenty of Ivy teams have won one NCAA game. Winning two (or more) is the real feat. Put up a good fight against Creighton too.

What are the chances that Princeton is invited and accepts an invite to a postseason tournament?
