Yes, he raised the Brown basketball program up multiple levels from the doldrums under Jesse Agel. The team always played hard with great defenses. It’s not easy to coach at Brown, as many have observed, and Mike made our program always competitive.
If he wasn’t a terrific coach, I can’t imagine that Michigan would have been interested.
73-109 Ivy. Hardly great. Probably making 3x as an asst at UM.
We can agree that Mike probably is making a lot more $ at Michigan. Michigan wouldn’t pay it, and he wouldn’t have been chosen, if he wasn’t really good.

Guy leaves his program in a tough spot, bolting in July. Can’t blame kids when they hit the portal.

I’m no Brown insider, so I’ll pass on how good a coach he was, although I agree that Michigan wouldn’t be hiring him if it didn’t think he had significant assets as a coach. What I disagree with is the applicability of the Parcells quote to college hoops. Whereas there is as much parity re resources in the NFL as is humanly possible, the exact opposite is the case in college hoops. So the Parcells quote is much, much less applicable here.

Well, the guy said initially he was a “great” coach. And although I’m sure he’s got a solid rep, great seems a bit overstated anyway you wanna look at the guy.
Knew Mike pretty well when he was at Penn, good guy. Hope he can join the former Penn coaches who became very successful at much higher levels including pros. We actually did a new plaque in Palestra honoring some of them.

Jasmer, you fail to account for the general situation confronting Brown basketball – it doesn’t have the name value of HYP or the basketball history of Penn. In those circumstances, rebuilding the program following the disastrous Agel years to make it consistently competitive despite devastating injuries to key bigs in recent years, while developing all-Ivy players are the marks of a great coach at Brown. We will miss him dearly.
Moving forward, thoughts on Tyson Wheeler as interim and might he be considered for full time?

Always seemed like a good coach to me.
he got unlucky in recent years losing to Yale in ILT on a buzzer beater
And I think transfers really hurt him subsequently
But I like the stuff he ran overall

Wheeler makes sense as the interim coach. It’s almost impossible to conduct a proper search at this point. If he proves himself, he gets a look at the permanent job. TJ Sorentine and Matt Kingsley also come to mind as possible replacements.

Who’s really in a position to trade up in the portal?
Has anyone actually hit the portal? Not sure who would really make sense at this juncture.
The Providence Journal mentioned 7 possible head coaches, including interim hc Tyson Wheeler and longtime former associate head coach TJ Sorrentine. It also noted that the portal opens when the new coach is hired, but there is an opportunity to enter the portal if that hiring is delayed.
The Projo also reported that Martin said he had such opportunities in the past (not surprising) but they did not check all of the boxes but that this one did.
The only guy from last year that I could see having even the slightest possibility of trading up is Jeremiah Jenkins. Certainly not the finished product, but a top 50 AssistRate in the country and a top 100 Steal% would appeal to somebody. Maybe Cuevas, who had a lot of Ivy and East Coast MM interest when he hit the portal initially. Who knows anymore. I didn’t think that AJ Lesburt would sit out a year in order to get one more year at Merrimack, so all bets are off.
