2025 Offseason Thread

I can’t understand why a kid would leave Princeton, where he’s on his way to a degree and will contribute to the team, for a lesser academic school where he won’t play at all. No scholarship and no NIL for him either. Seems like a very strange choice.

Duke’s not a bad school. His season last year was basically zero. Probably best for a change.

So he has only one year of basketball eligibility, but needs to attend two years of classes for a degree? Makes even less sense.

He got a scholarship and Duke is not a “lesser” academic school.

Dial Lodge said above that he got a non-scholarship admission. Is that incorrect? (And you’ll never get a H-Y-Pr grad to admit that Duke is in its class, much less the other Ivies)

Jack got an athletic scholarship to Duke. Reputationally (whatever that means), H-Y-P are viewed as superior, but as the old guard leaves, that will certainly change on some levels.I know, work with and have worked with many Ivy grads at the others and I would be hard pressed to locate a Brown or Cornell grad who is going to the mat on those 2 being superior to Duke. In 1980. Yes. In 1990. Yes. Not now.

This article suggests that he got a scholarship. Duke basketball pulls transfer portal commitment from Princeton guard
" Scott joins former Washington State guard Cedric Coward and Rice center Ifeanyi Ufochukwu as Duke’s transfer portal additions this offseason, although Coward remains in consideration for the 2025 NBA draft as of Sunday. With five returning Blue Devils and a trio of incoming freshmen, Scheyer has filled 11 of his scholarship openings (assuming Coward ends up in Durham), so Duke can remain active in the transfer portal or on the recruiting trail for any additional commitments."

A scholarship changes the math a bit - I would have guessed he could have gotten a spot at a place where he could have played a lot more, but in some ways getting the Duke experience is more of a guarantee than getting playing time at a mid major.

It is possible that the rules were bent for an athlete. Or since it appears he got a scholarship for this year, if he had to pay for an additional year to get his degree, he’s no worse off financially.

With regard to coming back - it first looks like if someone takes a voluntary leave of absence, they have three years to come back - “Students on leave are eligible for reinstatement of their enrollment for a three-year period, and many students who take a leave will have no requirements attached to their reinstatement” and while they also talk about students on leave taking courses at other institutions and potentially getting credit for that upon their return it also says - “Students who transfer to another institution as degree-seeking students are not eligible for reinstatement nor to petition for readmission, but may apply to Princeton’s transfer admission program.” It certainly was the case that to be eligible to play in Division I, you need to be a “degree-seeking student.”

Thanks for making the policy clear.

I get what you mean, but some kids seem to prefer the bigtime basketball experience even if it means sitting on the bench. No idea what Jack is thinking, of course, but sometimes if you find yourself as a role player at a mid major, you decide you’d rather have a seat on the end of the bench at a high major. Columbia had a big transfer out a while back who chose to be a bench player at Michigan (his name escapes me now). Seemed kind of similar. I agree with you that the Princeton degree and more playing time is likely the course I would take, but I can see the other side of it.

A lot we don’t know here. Among other things,
we don’t know what Mitch said about playing time if he stayed.

Mike Smith

Mike Smith was by no means a bench player at Michigan. If I recall correctly, he got a lot of quality minutes at the point, playing as a grad transfer.

Correct. I was just recalling he was a transfer to michigan

Jaron Faulds. Michigan native - had shown promise at Columbia and was a high recruit for the Lions. Never did anything at michigan.

That’s the one. Thanks. Like Scott, Faulds was a coach’s son. Always wondered if he was instrumental in getting the aforementioned Mike Smith to transfer, too.

Perhaps Scott is thinking about a coaching career and thinks that the Duke experience will be a big leg up. That would be rational.

As rumored, MacConnell officially lands at Stanford:

Tosan on the Nets Summer League team (with Danny Wolf). Games start on the 10th.

Technically, he’s still on a two-way contract, but maybe he gets bumped up to a full contract before the season begins.

Five draft picks probably don’t help his chances,
but he played well last year.
