It will be interesting to see whether a rising senior, majoring in communications and transferring to a third institution, can satisfy Columbia’s Core Curriculum requirements while remaining on track to graduate within four years.
I have solid reasons to believe she is visiting Columbia this weekend as a possible transfer destination.
I’m pretty sure that, after having several transfer players, the staff already knows how to handle these tranfers of credits. Coming from a high academic place like Stanford, there should be no major isssue.
She’s a New Yorker, a graduate of Cardinal Newman HS. Sounds like she may want to come home.
Not a instant star, but at 6’2”, it does seem as if she could help us up front.
She would probably be transferring to Barnard [or GS] (regarding the core curriculum issues).
A few years ago a high profile upperclassman QB transferred from Stanford to the football team and he went to GS.
She would be a perfect fit to replace Suzie. Did she (or is she) planning a visit soon?
I hope this won’t be at the expense of giving players like Chloe Vella, Alicia Mitchell, and even Mathis Dritz playing time.
That’s one of my concerns with Megan. It’s a little bit unfair to recruit someone and then cast them aside like yesterday’s trash. I’m not an insider. I don’t know that that’s what’s happening, but it looks like that from the outside.
It’s not a good look for Columbia to have two freshmen transferring out. This is not a professional ball club.
There’s money to be made out there.
The best players play. They compete against each other every single day. Coaches then go out and try to recruit better players.
That’s exactly my point. This is a college that supposedly values academics and student experiences first, but WBB becoming more and more akin to major power conferences where winning trumps the above and the result is marginal freshman team members are now transferring out.
There are a number of girls who have been kicked off the edge of the bench in recent years (Mary from Spain, and the 3 who entered the portal this year). What values does Columbia have if they recruit these “students-athletes” to be on the team, but will not retain them becuase there is a new shiny prize out there? Is this acceptable? I know Columbia unfortunately has bigger issues dragging it down, but this is a bad look. The players may be leaving on their own volition, and not because they were asked to get off the team, but its still a bad look. Megan was bragging that she hasn’t had a player in 10 years transfer to a D1 program, but it’s looking like an empty brag if we have three players entering the portal in one year.
I mean, they are basketball players, not children. The get accepted to Columbia because a coach believes in their potential and with expectations on how are they going to perform. They are required to sacrifice certain things to be able to play. This is not an amateur team of Columbia students that want to play basketball.
If they are not performing at the level they need to to be able to play, they won’t play. That’s how a team at this level works. Meg promissed she was going to work to turn this into one of the best basketball programs in the country. She is doing that, and we love her for it. If someone doesn’t want to have that standard and wants great academics, maybe they should consider NYU (great basketball too, but not the same level of sacrifice).
And if what they want is just to enjoy playing some basketball while in college, they are doing well by transfering to another place where they are able to do it. Meg might be wrong in some cases, but plans also change and things change a lot from when a player commits to when they start being part of the team.
Well, you know Meg’s doing something right when all that we have to gripe about is the playing time and loss of a few players at the end of the bench.
Meg is recruiting better players today than she did 7 years ago. For example, Carly Rivera was a solid player and a starter as a freshman on the 2019/20 team. She was part of the 2023 recruiting class that included Kaitlyn Davis and Abbey Hsu… the one that turned this program around. Carly likely sees very little playing time on today’s team. That’s just the nature of improving the program.
I give Meg a lot of credit for bringing in some solid transfers over the years… Jaida Patrick (Duke), Cecelia Collins (Bucknell), Maria Avlijas (Mississippi), and Helke Feldrappe (Missouri)… I think Ava Sciolla (Maryland) was her only miss.
But let’s face it… this is a numbers game… Meg’s trying to recruit as much talent as possible knowing that some won’t pan out or play all 4 years (remember Olivia Cooper and Habti Calvo?), and many won’t even accept her offer to play at Columbia (choose to play elsewhere).
That being said, let’s talk about our team next season. Chloe Dix is now official! (I guess she recently got admitted).

She is similar to the Henderson sisters, but probably closer to Kitty than Fliss in playstyle. Also I feel she has better 3pt shooting than both of them.
I would also love Mary Ashley Stevenson to come, even if it’s only for 1 year. Earning a B10 freshman of the year award is something few players can do. She then was very underutilized at Stanford, being benched in favor of taller freshman. She is a dominant 5, not much range. She should be able to be the best interior player in Ivy next year. Experienced player that should be ready to be a starter from day 1 and make us forget we just graduated Suz. And I believe she can well play along Dritz, Eriny, Tor, or other mobile bigs.
Same here… I would love to see Mary Ashley come home to NYC. I watched the first half of the Stanford WBIT game vs Quinnipiac… she’s nimble on her feet for a big, has good court vision, and can defend in the paint. The one drawback is that she doesn’t appear to have 3-pt range (4/34 in her career).
I see that Chloe Dix is wearing #4 in her Instagram photo… Fliss wears #4.
Yes, she does not have great 3-pt range and she is 6-2/6-3, but everything else is really solid. I was also impressed by her ability to distribute from the post. She excels at getting the ball there, turning around and either finding the open shooter or driving to the basket.
Chloe’s picture is quite old, probably from before Fliss was here. I believe she will be wearing the #14, as she did at New Hampton.
Great News! Welcome Mary!!!
She has herself listed as Class of 2028 on Insta; how does she have two years of eligibility remaining?
Let’s give MG a lot of credit. The team which briefly appeared to be in some disarray, could now easily be the strongest Columbia WBB yet.
My error: she is a Dalton graduate–that’s her NY connection.
The Cardinal Newman hs I referenced is in South Carolina. It is not the high school with that name in NYC.
