Cancun Challenge

After a tough loss yesterday vs Kansas State (Wildcats were red hot from deep… 17 for 26), the Lions lead the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State (ranked as the #1 mid-major this week), 33-32 at the half.

Nice win… 80-67, Lions. It was a close game until the final couple mins. Riley (31 pts, including a huge 4-pt play late) propelled Columbia to the victory.

What a change the team has made this week! A petty yesterday’s game was not a win, the offense was better than ever. A lot of positives so far from this week: Riley is back, the step up from some players is remarkable (Fliss, Jaama), specially Avlijas who finally starts to look like the player she was back in europe. This offense makes me dream again about another historic season. Hopefully we see this team improving further as the season moves on

Riley Weiss was amazing today. against mid-major power South Dakota State scoring 31 points including a program record 19 points in the fourth quarter. Next up for the Lions are the 12th ranked Tarheels of North Carolina.

Kind of heartbreaking end after 3 amazing quarters against one of the best teams in the country. Overall really positive trip to Mexico. We were arguably the second best team there, with SDSU and KSU being both bubble level teams. Now we have a couple of “easy” games heading into Seton Hall, what should be our last chance of building a promising non-conference resume.

These three games in Cancun were a confidence booster after the disappointing showing against St Joe’s and to some extent, Richmond. Imo, South Dakota State and Richmond are about the same caliber… in that Top 25-50 tier. Today’s loss was expected (UNC is a legit Top 20 team), but the Lions hung tough for about 30 minutes, so I think the team has to feel very good about their showing in Cancun.

Weiss has developed into a star… she’s fearless and can create her own shot, when needed, sometimes making shots that seem impossible.

Page looks like a first team All-Ivy candidate. Rafiu, Avlijas, and Henderson are steady/reliable.

But we need more from others… I’d love to see Broom and maybe one or two others step it up a notch. It seems that Jaama, Arrebola and/or Simmons are ready to contribute on a regular basis too. I’m not sure why Griffith doesn’t give Tor more playing time… she’s a more nimble version of Jaama and is not shy of contact in the paint. Those minutes are going to Erinugha, which is one of the biggest surprises to me. My guess is that Eirny is getting playing time because of her defensive ability.

I think they just got tired in the fourth quarter vs NC and it showed. 3 games in 3 days at this point in the season against tough opponents ! Coach Griffith doesn’t substitute a lot and reserves her time outs for the last minute in close ballgames. I think we would have lost anyway but there were times when I felt our girls needed a breather. NC had blowouts in their previous two games and were able to substitute liberally, so were fresher in Q4. Thoughts ?

UNC is a legit Top 10 team, no joke. I think we did feel the minutes at the end of the game: passes were week, we were getting stolen a lot of balls and getting caught in transition.

I think though that Richmond is considerably better than SDSU. Richmond is more like a Top25-30 team, and SDSU more like a Top40. Regardless, the hard loss is Saint Joseph.

In terms of playing time, Erinugha plays because of her defense and greediness. And Jaama because of her versatility. She is a 6-3 center with 3PT shooting that is fast enough to be able to switch defensively without too much trouble.

I agree with all the posts and would add that it would be helpful to know the status of Shippen, Mitchell, Feldrappe and the point guard from Greece. My concern is that there has been very little contribution thus far from any of the team’s newcomers. Hopefully,

I agree with all the posts regarding the Women’s Basketball Team.. Obviously, Riley Weiss is a great player and her supporting cast is starting to improve significantly. My concern, however, is the surprising lack of production from any of the newcomers. Indeed, several of the highly touted newcomers on the roster have played very little or not at all. Does anyone on the Board have any information on the missing?
