Columbia Gators

Good luck to the Columbia Gators… or is it the Florida Lions? on Monday night in the championship game.

Kyle Smith’s staff during the 2012-13 season was quite a collection of future head coaches…

Todd Golden (Florida)
Kevin Hovde (Columbia)
Mike Magpayo (Fordham)
Jon Jaques (Cornell)
Carlin Hartman (??)

Kyle Smith is not only an outstanding college basketball coach, but a very kind and friendly person. Kyle has been enormously successful in the coaching world. He deserves it.

John Andrzejek was recently hired to be the HC at Campbell. Not on the staff you mentioned but part of Kyle’s tree. He’s on the Florida staff as well.

Great article re all the coaches and an NBA GM spawned by former CU Men’s BB coach Kyle Smith while at CU, including all by one of the University of Florida’ Men’s BB coaches – one of whom is the new CU Men’s BB coach and rising young coaching star Kevin Hovde.

I will be very surprised if Florida doesn’t beat Houston Monday night for the national championship, CT y emphasized text

Time for CU fans to get behind Kevin and the Lions. Let’s Go!!!

Congratulations to the Florida Gators and the Gators Nation on winning the National Championship tonight in San Antonio!!! I’m excited for the beginning of the Hovde Era at Columbia!

That was a fun game to watch. I wanted to wager on the live line when Florida got down by 10, but I was too slow to act… they came back too quickly.

Hard to imagine Hartman not getting an offer in the next 12 months… will be interesting to see where he lands.

You are 200% right! Go Lions! (I can now stop saying Go Gators!)

By “You” I meant Lion600…

Thanks, Old Blue. Last night’s Championship Game between the Florida Gators and Houston was indeed an exciting Basketball Classic between two terrific basketball teams. For knowledgable Columbia Basketball Fans like ourselves it was probably the highlight of the most dismal decade in the history of Columbia Basketball. I still do not understand why Pilling did not change authors in the first chapter of the book. However, I am grateful to him for finally pulling the plug and replacing Engles with Kevin Hovde who I have doubt will revitalize the Columbia Men’s Basketball Program “quick as a Gator.” Congratulations also to those basketball players Kevin picks to ride the next Gator Express with him.

I think you meant to say, “…whom I have no doubt…”

Hovde press conference is Thursday 2pm. Info on CU Athletics site if you want to watch online.

Columbia9:

I can’t find the Kevin Hovde Thursday 2 pm press conference on the CUAD website. Can you provide the link as well as where it’s taking place? Thanks in advance. I’m guessing in the third floor lounge in Dodge Physical Fitness Center, which is where FB Coach Jon Poppe’s presser took place in December 2023. However, maybe it’s off campus given current limited access to the CU campus.

Best regards,

Old Blue

“I have heard that Stanford assistant recruiting coordinator Matt Elkin is joining the staff at Columbia as an assistant. Prior to his time at Stanford, Elkin spent four seasons as the DBO at Yale, and was a part of a staff that went to the NCAA Tournament in 2022 and 2024. Elkin also served as a GA at Northeastern. More on the rest of new head coach Kevin Hovde’s staff shortly.”

Yes, it’s in the Lou Gehrig lounge. Sorry, it’s an available via ESPN but might require a login etc.

No need to apologize. You need a bar code to get on campus, including at 120th street just off Broadway just before the Dodge Physical Fitness Center, whether for the Kevin Hovde press conference or otherwise. I now have two such bar codes.

Go Lions! (I no longer need to say Go Gators!).
How blessed is Columbia to get a UF men’s BB assistant coach who really wanted to return here, who was on a coaching staff that recruited, motivated and coached a remarkable group of young men (NIL or no NIL) who turned it around against Texas Tech, Auburn and most dramatically Houston to go on and win the national championship just two days ago, and who has already hit the ground running – see the Zach Braziler (sp) New York Post Sports article that was published just before the Gators took the court that evening. It doesn’t get much better than this at Columbia, with two notable recent exceptions: Peter Piling’s hire of Jon Poppe in December 2023 to coach football, which Jon took “from last to first” in the Ivies his rookie year, and Peter’s hire of Al Bagnoli (sp) in February 2015 for the same position.

See you soon again in cyberspace…

Columbia Athletics sent out an email blast about 40 minutes ago re the Kevin Hovde 2 pm press conference tomorrow and a link to ESPN+ to view it online. I’ll be there in person, but I’m guessing the link will be NG if one does not an ESPN+ paid subscription.

Kevin Hovde Press Conference video now.up on the CUAD website along with a follow up Lance Meadow interview of Kevin so you no longer need to subscribe to ESPN+ to watch the press conference

It’s in Columbia Athletics’ youtube channel also
