How is Mary Ashley Stevenson a Columbia College Junior?

I don’t understand the math here.

She might have one year of basketball and 2 years of academics left.

Looks good on paper but so did last year’s incoming class and contributions were modest (until the post-season).

True, but this incoming class has vastly better credentials than its predecessor. Columbia could

True. but this incoming class has vastly better credentials than its predecessor. I would not be surprised if Columbia is ranked in the top 25 nationally next season.

We also have the updated roster for next season. A part from transfers Vas and Shay, we can confirm that Maria Arrebola will no longer be part of the team next season as of now.

Overall a quite balanced team, with significant size (even more than last year). I might be missing another guard, as we only have 6. This means we will probably be playing with 3 players on the cout over 6’0" a lot. I would have never guessed we were going in that direction 2 years ago.

I feel bad for Maria Arrebola. She showed a lot of talent in her limited appearances, but as the team gets better Coach G seems to ship off players who dont make the rotation. Not what Ivy League athletics should be.

Any idea if she is still at Columbia? What are her plans?

On paper, probably the best group ever.

I feel bad that some players quit or transferred out, but that’s entirely understandable if you calculate likely minutes vs. required time commitment and determine that the increasing skill of your teammates means there’s not going to be very much left over for you.

I am puzzled by CC89"s post and agree with cc66’s post. CC89’S criticism of Coach G is totally absurd and entirely unfair. Unless he has some inside information that is unavailable to everyone else, his comments are strictly speculative and pure unadulterated nonsense.

I didn’t want to say much at that moment, but now that it’s official I will. Arrebola didn’t seem super happy on the team. I think she felt she was not getting recognized enough so she probably lost motivation, a trend that has been going on for more than a year now. Probably that meant that the coaches didn’t see in her enough improvement or reason to give her more minutes. Majoring in math and being an important player on one of the best institutions and teams in the country is definitely not trivial. This can happen in a team, and I think everyone recognizes it’s not ideal and can be critical to some extent, but also not something we should be super worried about.

I hope she gets to do whatever she feels better doing, regardless of it being stop playing semi-professional basketball and study, transfer, or going back to spain. I’m sure it will work out for her.

PS: For some reason I don’t fully understand, none of the spanish players that joined reached near their full potential. I hope Blau has a great next season and changes this.

Hey, I speak with some authority on this issue: in the fall of 1962, after three weeks rowing on the Harlem River, I quit crew because the Coach kept yelling–quite rightly, I might add----that I was out of stroke!

3 Spanish players in 3 years that not only didn’t reach their potential, but left the team:

Noa Comesana
Mary Lobon
Maria Arrebola

I Googled Mary and she played last year for MIT as a graduate student. Not sure about Noa.

Columbia getting the cold shoulder on the “Before MIT”…

Yeah, I thought she transferred but then I Googled “Craxton College” and it’s a high school in Spain so she must’ve graduated from Columbia/Barnard, but she appears not to be a happy camper…I wouldnt expect a check from her on Giving Day

Per her LinkedIn, she graduated from CU: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maria-lobon/
