The next three games are crucial for the Columbia Women Basketball Team. Columbia will be facing Cornell, Princeton and Penn, three talented teams, two of whom defeated the Lions the first time they met. The surprising loss to Penn last Saturday night revealed that not all of the Lions early season problems had been solved. With the exception of Riley Weiss, our shooting was pathetic. If Columbia is going to be successful in the Ivy League during the second half of the season someone other than Weiss and Page has to score consistently in double figures.
Susie and Fliss need to be very consistent and productive.
Not just Susie and Fliss, but everyone of the Columbia players has to shot much better and be more aggressive on defense for the Lions to be successful. Otherwise, Columbia will continue to struggle against teams like Cornell, Penn and Brown who rely on their outside shooting to win games.
True! In the Penn game, Broom and Fliss combined for 0 of 15 shooting and scored 1 pt in 50 minutes of playing time.
I think Columbia will beat Cornell, but ESPN has Cornell with a 4% chance.
They beat Columbia by 7at Levien, ad now get them at home. I would think Cornell feels tad disrespected.
Columbia women win going away, 80-55; Weiss scores 38, boosting her IL ppg to just short of 21 per game. But Maria Avlijas did not play today; any one know if she was injured?
Successful revenge game for the Lions who lost unexpectedly to Cornell in the season opener. The Amazing Riley Weiss scored 38 points. I lost count of the number of threes she made in a row during the game, but it was probably ten or eleven. She is just unbelievable. Riley has greatness written all over her–incredible outside shooter. Fun to watch. Columbia’s Caitlin Clark
Play-by-play guy said Broom was starting because Avlijas was out with an injury, but he didn’t elaborate. I didn’t notice if there were any shots of her on the bench during the espn+ telecast.
Not sure, but I think I saw her in sweats.
Hope she can play next weekend, in the Princeton/Penn games.
You have to love this Columbia Women’s Basketball Team with its very special cast of characters. Starting with the Head Coach, Megan G. how can any basketball not love her fire and enthusiasm. Then the players themselves are just so much fun to watch. First, you have Riley Weiss, an incredible outside shooter who is the second coming of Caitlin Clark, and maybe even Pistol Pete Maravich. Then you have the ball thief, Nasi Simmons, who has an uncanny ability to steal the ball. Nasi’s partner in crime is the quick and elusive Mia Broom. Add in all the other players with names no one can spell or pronounce, but who are mirror images of their strong and passionate Head Coach. My favorite names are "Fliss, Hilke Blau and Mrarta"but what about “Marija” and
“Eirna,” Thank you Ladies for your accomplishments thus far and good luck in bringing home another Ivy League Championship to Columbia.
Friday nite is a must win if we’re going to hang a 4th consecutive Ivy title banner. A loss and we fall 2 games behind Princeton late in the season. A win and we’re in the driver’s seat for at least a share of the Ivy
.
BTW, despite her ups and downs, Riley is now the clear front runner for POY with 38 and 40 point performances. Another win against Princeton would help here too.
I’m not too worried about Penn coming down from Ithaca and surprising us this time.
It’s an ankle injury–how severe is unclear.
I do agree that Columbia-Princeton Game #2 this Friday is a “must win” for Columbia if it is going to win the Ivy League title this year. It seems to me that Columbia was clearly better than Princeton in Game #1 at Princeton, but the Lions were severely handicapped by the referees who called two ridiculous touch fouls against Columbia’s best player, Riley Weiss, early in the game, and overall significantly more fouls on Columbia than Princeton.
If Princeton is healthy, I like our chances.
