Email just went out to season ticket holders.
From what I understand, these are the top candidates:
Dave Klatsky, NYU head coach
Matt Langel, Colgate head coach
John Krikorian, Christopher Newport head coach
Andy Toole, Robert Morris head coach
Fran McCaffery, Iowa head coach
Not Langel. He makes way too much money at Colgate, which Penn could not match and his family really is happy there.
McCaffery makes 3.3 MILLLION per year, but his buyout would be 4.2 over three years which I guess might ease the pain of an Ivy League head coach salary.
Is McCaffery about to be fired? Because he has said adamantly he will not resign. And do we really want a 65 year old coach coming off a firing?
McCaffery is going to be fired. I don’t think he would be a long-term solution. Klatsky stands head and shoulders as the best option.
What happened to Bowman?
He has too much baggage with the Jerome scandal.
He’s also an assistant at a top 10 program–he won’t come here even if we wanted him
Mr Kent has suggested Top 10 assts earlier.
Making close to 500k per year; why take a salary cut?
Add Brett MacConnell and John Galagher to Penn. But, would be surprised if it isn’t Klatsky at Penn first, or Columbia.
This job pays more than that
I’m a proponent of the non-D1 candidates in general. Often overlooked and have sustained proven success of leading a team in less than ideal circumstances. Recency bias with McCollum thriving at Drake. Klatsky doesn’t have the length of resume as a lot of the other JuCo/D3 guys but his short tenure at NYU has been impressive. The only thing that would make me nervous is he has benefited from outrecruiting UAA teams, especially in terms of down transfers. He’s thrived in taking D1 walk-ons and making them stars in their “grad-years”.
Will be interesting to see if Klatsky prefers to stay in NYC or wants to go to his alma matter.
Glad to hear it. The Ivies do not publish these data. When SJ left Princeton for Fairfield for about 500K, it was said to be a significant salary jump, so I have assumed back then the salary at Princeton was much less than that. Even allowing for inflation, I did not think Ivy coaches had reached 500k (except of course Amaker).
Add Scott Pera to list. Penn needs new energy. Coach with national ties. And he’s won at a tough academic school.
Pera never had a winning conference record or a team over KenPom 188 at Rice in seven years and his teams were consistently terrible defensively. I don’t think he’ll be a serious candidate.
Interesting that Engles was allowed to resign and issue a statement, which Donahue and his entire staff were fired with no statement.
Pilling is a class act.
Oh, that’s quite a statement.
