Game Thread: Akron

4 minutes in and Pierce is on the sideline with an ankle injury. Walked off under his own power but in some real pain.

EDIT: Caden taped up and checking back in at the under-12 timeout.

Bad start. Lots of clumsy TOs, no 3s falling, Akron killing us on the boards without Pierce on the court.

Welp, the team didn’t come to play. Again. Stepped on the sideline for the 3rd time already.

Down 41-30. Akron hit a buzzer-beater 3 after Peters only made 2 of 3 FTs.

Game feels like a blowout loss unless Lee takes over and drops 30+. Davis is really struggling - he’s lost his mojo. Players look demoralized with Pierce’s ankle wrapped in ice and their 3s not falling.

This was a trap game after the big Rutgers win and our guys fell right into it. This team plays up or down to their competition and Akron is taking full advantage.

Davis can’t buy a 3.

Davis having the worst game of his career. 1-12, 0-6 from deep (all wide open).

He is just mentally cooked. Tough to watch.

What a way to close out the year - getting destroyed at home by Akron. At least we have an excuse with Pierce being sidelined.

I’ll say this much: as awful as they look today, the effort is there.

Seals isolations = automatic turnover.

Davis hits a 3! Maybe that gets him going.

At some point, Lee has got to take over. If we’re gonna lose, might as well do it with your best player.

Hicke cuts the deficit to 3! Win or lose, at least they didn’t quit like the Wright State game.

Free throws gonna cost us a great comeback win.

REDEMPTION FOR DALEN

I don’t know if that was a 3 but it was called a 3 and I don’t see the replay angle to overturn it.

EDIT: F**K. It was called a 3, then changed to a 2. But they’re keeping it a 2. Ugh.

SECOND EDIT: NOW IT’S A THREE. That’s the correct call - the ref called it a 3. Not sure why they tried to reverse the original call.

My doom-posting worked like a charm!

Reverse jinx wins the game… with a little help from the actual players

Dalen really showed something today… Absolute miserable 25 minutes to start - he even smacked the stanchion in frustration. An elite scorer unable to hit wide-open shots.

But he kept contributing dimes and defense, made 1-2 shots in a row, and then nailed the epic 3 to win the game. He’s going to be great next year (if he stays).

I just hope Caden is okay. A sprained ankle could be fine in a few days… or a few weeks. Thank heavens for Ivy Madness. We can finish 2nd or 3rd and still go dancing.

Also a big shoutout to Jackson Hicke, who had the best game of his young career.

He’s so good at chasedown/weak-side blocks. Akron’s Okonkwo was destroying us inside without Caden and Hicke was all that could slow him down.

We’re gonna need Hicke in Ivy play. He still makes mistakes but he’s got ice in his veins for the big shot or block. Can’t just rely on Xaivian to save us (though he had another great game of course).

Hicke was the key to the game and his defense on Harper was also crucial.

By heat mapping, Hicke is far and away the best inside scorer on the team (not counting lobs to Abdullahi).

I suddenly realized that we had an early game today (I’m on Mountain Time) and tuned in when we were down 11 early in 2nd half. Mentally prepared myself for loss and only then did I see Caden on crutches. Wasn’t sure which was worse!

What an epic comeback!

Dalen is tough and remarkably cool. I hope that somehow he fuses with the team and continues as a Tiger after this season. He will be swamped with interested teams and the $ will be tempting. He couldn’t be blamed for leaving for the $ and the right school. Regardless, he is a great player and a real TIGER. Whatever he does, he stands tall in my mind. Stay, DALEN!

You’re a tough judge! High expectations are great for players. But, we fans have to lighten up. GO TIGERS!

I just don’t want to see the team waste a golden opportunity for a 2023-type run.

Last March was so disappointing and this era of NIL/transfers means that Ivy hoops is on the decline.

Gotta take advantage of Lee and Pierce while they’re still here! Because of their elite talents, this team could absolutely win 2+ games in the NCAA tourney… if they can get there.
