Game Thread: Dartmouth II

I just don’t think our players have great basketball IQ. Just make really elementary mistakes.

Lee, Pierce, Davis, Peters… these same guys were on the team last year.

With the exception of Xaivian, they’re just not performing half as well this season.

Pierce could have had an easy putback off a Lee miss - ball slipped through his fingers.

Mush

He was the glue we needed.

Our players are have quit on this game and probably the season.

It’s got to be lack of production from Pierce. Lee is playing hero ball. The also need the threat from Pierce in the post to open up three point shots. They have been throwing it to Hicke in the post more - but that’s not his game yet.

After that first half comeback, I thought they would pull it out. Or at least make it close.

Turns out they’re gonna lose by 20+ just like it seemed at 21-4. They just don’t care.

Not a banner day for Tiger teams.

Lee is playing hero ball because literally no one else can score consistently.

Pierce and Lee together can dominate - when one of them is off (almost always Pierce), the whole offense falls apart. And it’s hard to play defense when you can’t score for 4-8 minutes at a time.

Jack Scott with a Jack Scott moment - nice steal then a terrible turnover right after.

Sums up the season.

Not criticizing Lee, Pierce isn’t right. Only 5 shots! It’s not that he’s not playing well - he’s not a factor in the offense. He’s not getting meaningful touches in the offense.

He’s not getting touches because he’s a disaster on offense right now - automatic miss or turnover.

Again, I don’t know if he’s injured but giving Pierce more touches is NOT the answer.

What I’m seeing is mental. So much self-doubt and second-guessing from the team aside from Xaivian. They need his mentality (“Missed 5 in a row? Who cares. Keep attacking.”)

With Mitchell-Day hurt in the final moments, this game could be a loss for both teams.

Hard to know what happened to this team this season. They seem to be going downhill. Depressing since the Ivies began. We seem to need a leader like Mush to take over and not look back. But I don’t see one on this squad. Shades of the brief tenure of Joe Scott.

This is a small, defensively challenged squad. They win by scoring well while defending okay.

With Pierce giving us nothing on offense, Lee is the one and only source of offense - and that’s not enough. No one player can carry a team to a great season.

Yea I mentioned earlier this season we lack a real leader. Fear the same next year right now.

Looks to me like a team that is, and has been all season, emotionally drained. Maybe all the pre-season hype has worn on them. Every game is a huge struggle.

I’m not saying getting Pierce more touches is the answer, I’m saying that when the reigning Ivy POY is a disaster on offense that’s the problem. We’ve documented that the other bigs haven’t come along as fast as we wanted - but if Pierce is just playing defense and rebounding we have no interior threat - and that makes it harder to get the open threes.

100% agree. I don’t know what the answer is, though.

If Pierce can’t get himself right, then the season is already over. Maybe Lee gets us Ws over Columbia and Penn to finish 8-6 and slip into the ILT, but they’ll lose by 20 to Yale in the semis.

“Team ball” put us in a 18-2, 21-4 hole. Leaning on Lee then Davis made it a 3-4pt game.

No one else is scoring because they all need to play off Pierce and Lee (inside, outside).

I know I’m being hard on Pierce but it’s also a compliment - he’s soooo important that if he’s off, the team can’t recover. They can win without Davis or Peters. They can’t win without Pierce or Lee.

I don’t think it’s leadership, tactics, coaching - your best player (1 or 1a) isn’t right. What I meant about the touches is - it’s not like he got the ball and was outmatched by the defense - he’s not getting the ball in his usual places at all. Posted Pierce’s game log- something isn’t right.
