Carrying over the tradition from the
old board. As usual, some obvious
picks and some close calls. I will
get the ball rolling, but not many
strong feelings this year.
First team: -Mbeng
Poulakidis
Townsend
Cornish
Lee
Second Team- Williams
Okereke
Lilly
Pierce
Mitchell-Day
Honorable Mention- Pigge, Spinoso, Board
ROY-Hinton
DPOY- Mbeng
POY- Poulakidis
Flip a three-sided coin among the Yalies for POY.
It has been suggested that each coach
nominates one of their guys. Idk so, I see
Jones opting to give Mbeng a well-deserved
3-time defensive award, and favoring his other
senior for POY. For what it is worth, Townsweend’s
production may be the most impressive.
Agree with most of your picks. FWIW, I think Yale, much like Princeton last year, will not get 3 guys on the 1st team, even if you could make a compelling argument.
My picks would be:
First Team
Mbeng, Yale
Lee, Princeton
Cornish, Dartmouth
Okereke, Cornell
Townsend, Yale
Second Team
Lilly, Jr., Brown
Brown, Penn
Poulakidas, Yale
Noard, Cornell
Mitchell-Day, Dartmouth
Honorable Mention
Pigge, Harvard
Roberts, Penn
Agree with ROY and DPOY - think those will be unanimous - and would like to see Townsend win the POY, but think it will likely be a guard.
For COY, I think it should go to McLaughlin, who turned a team that was not only disregarded, but the object of a decent amount of derision, into an Ivy Madness team. However, I would understand if Jones got it.
Agreed, I think Yale only would’ve gotten 3 first-teamers with a perfect season. Now, I think it’s just two.
PoY: whoever Yale nominates (probably Bez Mbeng)
CoY: Dave McLaughlin, Dartmouth
DPoY: Bez Mbeng, Yale
RoY: Robert Hinton, Harvard
First Team:
Bez Mbeng, Yale
Xaivian Lee, Princeton
Nick Townsend, Yale
AK Okereke, Cornell
Ryan Cornish, Dartmouth
Second Team:
Kino Lilly, Brown
John Poulakidas, Yale
Cooper Noard, Cornell
Brandon Mitchell-Day, Dartmouth
Robert Hinton, Harvard
The Jones/McLaughlin debate if Yale went 14-0 would’ve been interesting, but I think you gotta give it to DM now. Dartmouth might finish second in the league after being almost unanimously last preseason.
In League Play, he is second in rebounds, sixth in
assists and minutes, and averaged 11 points a game.
He keyed defensive pressure in many of their
come-backs. Injuries kept him below our expectations,
but there are not 10 other guys in the League I would
take over him. One guy’s opinion.
I would be shocked if John did not make first team and have him at 60-40 over Bez for POY. I vote in the Ivy Hoops Online poll and will probably include all 3 Yale guys. Right or wrong, I think the Yale season and players will be judged more favorably at 13-1 than 12-2. POY is close between John and Bez. John might get the nod because Bez will be DPOY yet again. If Yale goes 13-1, really close between James and Dave. At 12-2, Dave gets it. He was getting fired if they did not make the Ivy tourney.
John is The Guy You Gameplan Around, which for the coaches tends to count for a lot. But he’s had one too many off games for me to give him the nod tbh.
Sorry for going against the majority, but I feel that if there are not 3 Yale in the first team, Mbeng is the one who is dropping to 2nd team. My selection is though
Second Team:
Brown, Penn
Lilly, Brown
Okereke, Cornell
Noard, Cornell
Mitchell-Day, Dartmouth
Honorable Mention:
Pierce, Princeton
Robert Hinton, Harvard
Williams, Cornell
I agree about McLaughlin, but I think Yale has been too strong and consistent as a team to not give credit to Jones for it. By the way, does only IL season count for this? Because if not I can see DLR getting at least an honorable mention for the numbers he had when he was healthy
How many ROW awards has HInton won vs Amudsen from Dartmouth? COuld that vote be closer than we think? Amudsen had some monster weekends early in season.
I also debated with myself including Amudsen in the conversation. He is definitely someone to consider, as he would have won any other year, but I think Hinton has been too good to no give him the award. It’s 7 ROW for Hinton vs 5 ROW for Amudsen. Only counting IL season it’s 4-2 in favor of Hinton. If Admusen pulls out a really good last game might be tight, but I think his chances are low anyways
This is what my ballot would look like (not necessarily what I think will happen).
POY: Bez Mbeng (or whoever Yale chooses as their pick. Townsend would be my #2 pick)
DPOY: Bez Mbeng
ROY: Robert Hinton
COY: James Jones (lost Danny Wolf, went 13-1)
I expect a Yale player will be the PoY. I think it should be Mbang but if it’s the case that the process involves the coaches nominating one of their players for the honor, I’d understand Jones nominating Poulakidas for the award, understanding that Mbang is a virtual certainty to be the DPoY (and first team All-Ivy).
Jones should be the CoY but it would be understandable if he other coaches decide to spread that award around and honor McLaughlin
