The 5 freshmen listed on Verbal Commits are all shown, but Deven Austin is not back. Ryan Duncan, who played the last two seasons, is also not listed on the roster this year.
This is going to be a big “step up” year for the team. Lots of guys are going to have to raise their level of play and their consistency on both sides of the ball. Hope they play with a chip on their shoulders.
Very difficult to project how this season goes. I would like to think that if Sussberg plays well enough to be chosen as Freshman of the Year, the team might squeak into the tournament. I’m sure this is just wishful thinking.
Anything could happen this season. I am nurturing optimistic scenarios because why not? But if the front line gets dominated things could go pretty badly.
Article on roster turnover and the new reality of Ivy hoops.
“I have to play the freshmen and the sophomores because there’s no way around it,” Henderson said. “There’s no way we can get through the season without them getting a lot of minutes. … We need to arrive toward January with these guys having played a lot of minutes in the non-conference. We’re going to take some lumps (because) the schedule is hard.”
Perhaps this is what they should have always done, even with Lee and Pierce. Yeah it’s nice to have a Top 40–60 rating in non-conf, but what does it matter when Yale and Cornell’s superior depth beats you in league play?
I’m expecting Davis to have an All-Ivy season and Hicke to take a big leap as a Spencer Weisz-esque glue guy. But we’ll need a big to play at an All-Ivy level to make the ILT and have a chance at an upset. Happy? Huggins? Landon Clark?
Definitely seems so. But if we don’t have a true shot blocker and low-post threat, Mitch might just opt to have another floor-spacer who can score and pull the opposing bigs away from the basket.
I’m hoping Huggins takes a big step forward like Maddox and Aririguzoh did as upperclassmen.
I think that Happy could play the old high-post distributor role a la Nate Walton, Kevin Mullins, etc. in the offense. He’s shown flashes of passing that way and has the additional advantage of being a decent and willing three-point shooter.
But the low-post defense and defensive rebounding is going to be a big issue this year unless Abdulahi or Huggins or somebody like that can offer some strength and resistance and the perimeter guys do consistent yeoman’s work boxing out and peeling back to help out on the defensive glass. It has been done by smaller teams at all levels of the game, but it takes a lot of commitment.
When asked which freshmen will be ready to play a significant role Mitch mentioned:
Landon Clark “lefty guard/forward, fast, range-y,” “he’s comfortable with the ball in his hands.”
Sebastian Whitfield, “a bigger guard, plays physically, improving at a rapid rate.”
Both will see “significant minutes, important minutes”
Interesting to hear Clark described like a wing, not a big. Not surprised to hear that he’ll get a chance to play right away. Excited to see what Whitfield can do. Had offers from Yale, Columbia and Texas A&M.
