Michael Zanoni

I heard that Penn didn’t honor Michael Zanoni on senior night. There’s also some buzz on different pages that Penn is getting him back next season.. He only played in 4 games his sophomore year at Mercer, but the ivy has a strict four year eligibility clock, right? How would he be eligible in his 5th year of college?

This happened more in the past at Penn in 90s/00s/10s. Players would do things like take a double major so that they needed more time to complete the degree. Most recent I can think of was maybe Tyler Bernardini? Someone else might remember someone more recent.

This is my generic understanding of the post COVID world:

  • The NCAA determines whether an athlete still has one of the “four allowed seasons” of competition remaining.

  • The Ivy school determines whether the athlete is still enrolled as an undergraduate.

  • If both are true, an Ivy student-athlete can compete in a fifth academic year - without any special Ivy exception.

  • Therotically I believe a G-League player that has undergartde eligibility and is deemed NCAA eligible by the NCAA or the Courts would be eligible to play for an Ivy

I don’t know if he necessarily has to be pursuing a double-major. We don’t know how many credits transferred with him and also, he had mono last year—I had mono my soph year at Penn and ended up with 2 incompletes that had to be finished later. But yes, if he is deemed eligible for a 4th year by the NCAA and has not graduated, he is eligible to play next year at Penn and the Philadelphia Inquirer story (which I gifted on the other board on this same topic) reported that he will return for another season.
