Pierce officially sitting out the season

“UK would have an income stream, which is very likely taxable as unrelated business income. Is this more bottom-line efficient way to raise funds than other ways to raise funds?”

Not necessarily the BEST way to raise funds, but a rationalization to create and maintain a competitive athletic program outside the general operating budget.

Landing spot for Pierce

Do we know if he has an agent to begin the search for a paying position?

The ESPN article said he’s represented by Priority Sports

What’s the downside of recruiting a talented prospect with the understanding that he practices with the team but does not play his freshman year? He plays sophomore through senior years and graduates with a year of eligibility remaining when he can test his skills at a more visible program and get a free year of grad school at the same time?

I’ve wondered about this. The obvious downside for the Ivy team is that they don’t get four years of the player. But I do think in the modern reality you have to embrace the existence of the portal and NIL. Even if you don’t bring in transfers or pay out NIL, there are other ways to look for an advantage. One is to do exactly as you say — expressly sell the idea of getting an Ivy degree plus a year of big time basketball with NIL money as a grad student. You might find some kids pushing to graduate early, play 2 years, degree in 3, and get 2 years of grad school. Dartmouth had the kid who graduated early and then went to Purdue for 2 years a little while back.

How bout the ivies join the new world or downgrade hoops like they did with football? No middle ground will work.

I don’t have an issue with recruiting players and promoting the idea of graduating with a year left of eligibility. But I think this has to be by talking up graduating in 3 years (and I would not be surprised if this has already become routine practice). I don’t think it’s realistic to expect talented players to be willing to sit for a year.

It’s a fair point but I will care significantly less if we drop a level. Beating NYU in front of 500 people doesn’t do it for me.

Same here. I’ll be out if they drop.

NYU is 3 levels down. No one is seriously considering D-III. What is being contemplated is that a new division similar to FCS (1-AA) in football be created, allowing those teams to play the higher level teams but having a separate championship tournament. In all likelihood the current NCAA tournament will be, at a minimum, expanded to further decrease the chances of Cinderella runs by lower money schools. We’ll see, but I see no way the Ivies decide to drop to D-III.

I mostly say D3 because that’s what most of the other high academic local schools would be us. More natural rivalries would be the UAA(?) Conference of Chicago, WashU etc. Nevertheless, any drop would make my interest wane significantly

Basically he wasn’t happy and wants to get paid. I wish him well. It’s a system gone mad.

As a sidebar topic, he mentions the two assistant coaches that left. Has anything come to light about this incident?

The rumor around the league was MacConnell was fired for shopping Lee and Pierce and that Rowley was insubordinate. Again, just rumors.

I had heard the rumor about MacConnell; hadn’t heard about Rowley. Has Rowley found a new postition?

He’s at Air Force
