Not sure how beating those 3 teams in last-minute, eek-out games gets us to #86, but that’s where we are.

There are what, 50 schools getting votes? To me, reinforcement that many voters are merely looking at W-L, name recognition, and what they see as potential, but have little idea who is really actually playing well or not (with a few obvious exceptions, like Gonzaga). Iona, Duquesne and Northeastern not even mentioned.
Maybe I’m just contrarian but I try not to look at such polls early in the season when results are too few to mean much.
