I agree completely. If our Athletic Director doesn’t terminate Engles in the next two weeks, I will be very disappointed. And, if the Athletic Director fails to take such action on a timely basis, then the Athletic Director must be terminated as well. By virtue of tonight’s loss to Harvard, Engles clinched his eighth consecutive losing season as Columbia’s Head Coach. His current team is 1-8 in the Ivy League and deep in the cellar. His composite record against Columbia’s Ivy League opponents is 24-83. Overall it is a shockingly bad 70-143. The damage he has done to the careers of so many of Columbia’s players during his tenure was highlighted in your post; however there are many other players who were affected negatively as the result of the mess he made. I am worried that if Engles is not timely terminated in the very near future there willl be a mass exodus of current players from the team.
Not to pick on one guy, but Avery Brown is case in point for why Engles needs to go (aside from the record). This was a highly recruited player. Had high-major offers. He is the worst starter, and arguably the worst rotation player in the entire conference. He is shooting 45 percent on 2 pointers, and 23 percent on 3 pointers. Constantly getting his shot blocked. Constantly turning it over in critical situations. Misses big free throws. He hasn’t improved even the slightest bit in 3 years. Any other coach in this league might turn him into an all-Ivy player. Engles HAS TO GO.
Engles needs to be gone yesterday
Contract is up and it seems inevitable. Players won’t leave. They love being at Columbia.
Your suggestion that Pilling be fired if he doesn’t fire Engles before the end of the season (2 weeks) is ridiculous and shockingly arrogant. He double downed on Engles right ahead of Covid and it certainly hasn’t worked. Columbia athletics has flourished under Pilling. Women’s basketball, tennis, now football just to name a few programs excelling. And let’s not forget that 99.5% of the graduating athletes get jobs or go to grad school. Lay off Pilling.
