Vermont @ Princeton

Vermont -1.5 to -3.5.

Does Mitch opt to double Yalden on the pass?

Well, they couldn’t ever stop him in the first game.

Let’s make it eight straight losses by 5pts or less.

I’m more interested in getting a Davis injury update than the game itself.

They don’t know how to win yet. Bad possessions down the stretch, no key defensive rebounds, missed defensive assignment on Long, ball in the wrong hands offensively or bad shot selection. Lucky to go to OT.

What a nice surprise. This had all the earmarks of the last 7 games but somehow they pulled it out. Homecourt helps.

This team remains a mystery despite what outsiders might think. With a healthy Davis, they could easily be 11-4 against a solid non-conf schedule. But ultimately, that’s all hypothetical.

Let’s see if we get an update on Dalen in the Trentonian postgame writeup. I’m not convinced he’ll be ready for next week.

They are getting better. helps to hit some 3s. Abdullahi is starting to find himself.

A much, much needed win, and some hopeful signs. Abdullahi looks like he’ll more than hold his own against just about anyone he faces in the Ivy; Clark had a nice game ( I’m guessing the best this year), and Stanton proved again he can be the driller we all hoped he could be. Just need more from the 5 spot in my opinion; who knows , maybe we’ll get it in Ivy play.

Having said that, I think it’s pretty clear we would’ve lost that game had Vermonts big guy not left the game early.

Go tigers, shock the world, beat Penn.

Clark has shown steady progress at both ends of the court. Would not be surprised for him to have a big scoring night in league play with the right match up.

Nice feature on the win, Landon Clark and an update of sorts on Davis:

To that point, Davis appears no closer to returning. He isn’t so much as running or jogging when his teammates go through pregame warmups. It appears unlikely he’ll be ready for the Ivy opener Monday against Penn.

ā€œI have no idea,ā€ Henderson said about Davis’ progress. ā€œWe’re fingers crossed and doing little dances every day. Hopefully he gets better.ā€

Barring a miracle, it looks like Davis is going to miss a bunch of league games.

At what point does he declare he’s out for the season and retain a year of eligibility?

Yeah, I’m starting to suspect that’s where this is going. Especially considering the current NCAA rules (or lack thereof):

  1. Medical redshirt the rest of junior year while still going to class. He only played 6 games after all.
  2. Play his senior year at Princeton, put up big stats and graduate.
  3. Play a 4th season elsewhere as a graduate student (like Pierce will do).

All things considered, I wouldn’t hate that. At least we’d get one more season of Dalen with a stronger, more experienced team around him. I don’t see any current players getting big NIL offers after this season. Most/all should be back.

Bad news about Davis. Has my thoughts drifting to next year.

Last couple of games have shown marked improvement. More semblance of balanced in control offense and great reduction in the careless turnovers that cost them in November. They still have their meltdown moments but I put that on the coach for not having sets/calls on the offensive end. Too many times it is get the ball to Hicke and see if he can pivot his way to a fade away contested shot. Looking back from early November:

  1. Incredible growth out of Stanton. #1 with a bullet in regards to effort and consistency.

  2. Last 4 games - Happy has gone 1-11 from 3pt line after shooting 17-46 (37%) in the games prior. He needs to find his confidence as teams are going to continue to leave him open and if he isn’t a threat is bogs down the lane for Malik… allows people to come double/trap in the post.

  3. Landon Clark - -keep stacking growth young fella.. best game yet yesterday. He is 4th on the team in minutes, 4th in rebounds, but 8th in scoring and 8th in attempts. Davis has more attempts and has played 9 less games.

All good signs.

Two consecutive games where they looked like a decent team and not just some skilled but young players. They obviously play better against teams that don’t pressure the ball that hard in the half court, but they also were able to run at least a semblance of offense on the great majority of their possessions. Turnovers not too bad, some key ORs, taking open threes in rhythm while still attacking the post, and even the finishing at the rim was slightly better. Defense is still too inconsistent, especially when they get tired in the second half and the rebounding drops off.

Disappointing news about DD. But they should have enough overall shooting ability to be competitive if they can get a reasonable number of stops. After seeing Yalden twice, I shudder to think of what Townsend will do against this team. But Abdulahi and Huggins are starting to look more confident.

So, is his three point shooting going the way of his foul shooting?

I think so… I’m no expert but what is concerning is that his misses (both FT and 3PT) are not of the distance variety. Kids who grew up shooting 3’s like this generation had greater chance of developing really bad shooting form.. meaning all arms.. using both hands … not using their legs. If misses are distance - -front or back of the rim.. it is usually just a matter arc and launch point. Misses left or right where they are off line are are just really poor shooting mechanics. In many cases it is from kids not practicing their shooting at game speed or with tired legs.. everything is done in relaxed warm up speed. Kids with good mechanics have deep range ..
