Way too early predictions for upcoming Ivy season

Btw Caden and Ethan Roberts will be teammates this summer for 3x3 in the World University games!

19 guys seems pretty unwieldy. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

With new reality that you can transfer and make a $1m i expect even a ā€œhangnailā€ may be reason to injury redshirt

Given that only a minority of students complete a bachelor’s degree in four years, I would like to see the NCAA grant all college students 5 years of sports eligibility. This could enhance basketball in the NIL era: no need to go to Europe to keep playing and get paid. An occasional player might even climb the ladder to the NBA with an additional year.

I agree. Only challenge for the Ivies is it’s another year of tuition etc. I’d also like to see the Ivy League allow grad students to play. Doesn’t help Princeton but it’s a small change that should happen. We lose some good student-athletes every year who are attractive grad school candidates. Columbia’s Mike Smith was a great example. Good student who would have stayed for some of his MBA if allowed.

I’d need to be convinced that it would be a good idea to add a year of eligibility across the board. There are a finite number of athletes you can put on the field/court/rink/pool/river. The fifth-year seniors/grad students would take playing time from underclassmen. Is that self-evidently a good thing?

An aspect I had not considered.

I think at least it would reduce the likelihood of a walk-on making the team.

Fine for a NCAA rule but ivy league institutions are different. Yale requires all students finish their degrees in 4 years. I doubt they would change this for athletes.

Yes, Princeton same rule.

But it would grant all such ivy athletes a fifth year in this country at another institution.

Although I am not particularly invested in allowimg grad students, I suspect the counter argument is that you are replacing an undergrad spot with a grad student so no overall increase. IMO rosters are already large although I expect coaches would disagree.

Are there any rules prohibiting power program with real salary budgets soliciting transfers from league?

There are certainly rules, and ones that likely would apply in this case, but one only need to look at college softball to see loopholes may exist.

Why the enthusiasm for Harvard? I see they had justhad nice away win at Colgate
I hadnt been factoring them in much
Thanks

A hard year to read, but I put weight on returning proven talent. I think, aside from yale, Hinton, Pigge

and Battie are the best trio returning. Barbour and Hunt are also talented. They are a bit under-sized and point guard is uncertain, but the League is down.

My guesses are:

  1. Yale (I don’t think this Yale team is bulletproof, for Yale standards they’re very weak defensively and on the glass. Have benefitted from incredibly hot shooting from deep in the non-con. Just not sure there’s enough on the other competitors to top them)
  2. Columbia
  3. Cornell
  4. Penn
  5. Princeton
  6. Harvard
  7. Brown
  8. Dartmouth
