I can see the argument about “fitting in” or resentment either way. Ultimately I believe the current mood is not terribly principled, thus my current reaction is that trying to show we are “mainstream” through sports would not count for much. As eli suggests, does anyone believe this adminstration will back off if we adopt an NIL model? If relatability is the goal, better to focus on other aspects. One example would be for PU to change its pretentious promotional pieces aired during games (“we travel down a road few dare to follow” - seriously? Who could possibly relate to that?).
I don’t suggest resolving sports issues are off the presidents’ radar, but events of the past few weeks, having not just major financial repercussions but also fundamental governance interference, are more significant right now.
