Women Host Richmond 11/15

Good home matchup against Richmond tomorrow. The Spiders started the season ranked #24, are 2-1 with a loss to Texas. They’re a good team.

Richmond is indeed a very good team and the game should be close. Columbia has the home court advantage which might be the difference tomorrow if a large crowd shows up at Levien and makes plenty of noise. Our women s ’basketball team deserves some “Levien Loonies” at their home games.

Even if it’s a home game, I don’t think we are favourites. Anyways, I hope there really is a good crowd, I will be there. Thursday’s mens oppener in that sense was a bit disappointing. I hope if they keep playing good the crowd gets bigger and bigger

Tough night for Riley and the Lions against a good Richmond squad. The women certainly have some pieces to replace the production of Kitty and Cece. That said, those 2 were perimeter players who could get to the key, draw the defense and kick the ball out to Riley. We need someone to do that this year to help Riley get some more good looks. They’ll figure it out.

I agree that the major issue facing the Columbia Women’s Basketball Team is that the necessary pieces to replace the production of Kitty Henderson ad Cece Collins have not yet been identied.

The analytics/stats from the Richmond game suggest that Mia Broom should be seeing more playing time. However, the bigger issue with the team is the almost complete lack of contribution so far from the newcomers. Obviously, Coach G realizes that, and, of course, it is still very early in the season so we can expect to see some new faces in the line-up soon.

A couple of thoughts:

Expected result but it sucks because on a good Riley night we would have won this. She needs to understand that not everything is for her to shoot and that dragging attention means someone else is open. She missed a ton of tough shots while someone else was open.

Mia Broom is they key for this team to work, and the second half proves it. But she need some serious work on mental toughness and concentration. Her defensive first half is the reason why Coach G is not relying on her more. Left too many open threes to a team that their offense is basically finding the open man at the three. If she fixes that, she is going to be very important.

I disagree that the main point is finding who goes well with Riley at the guard. We have to understand that we are going to have an advantadge inside most of the games, and that our main plan should be feed inside on a good position. When we did that, we were better than Richmond, Butler and Ohio. We have to switch the offensive mentality of the guard play being the main point of attention. It was our strength last season, but it is not now.

Eventually, I do expect you to be right, but until now senior Susie Rafiu is the only big on the roster who has scored from inside the paint. Perri Page is a very good player, but she is only 5’11” tall so she has to be considered a tall guard.
