Columbia

I’m pretty sure Mitch played in that game. I know Mad Dog Earle did.

Clearly, this team is out to make sure that we older fans don’t live much longer:thinking::tiger2::worried:

The Carnegie Mellon fiasco (is there a name for that game? The D3 Disaster?) and the Miracle at the Palestra being evoked by the same game! Columbia at home is in between a D3 home game and a championship Penn team on the road. Not quite one for the ages, but a great win nonetheless.

I keep saying this, but this team reminds me of the 2010-11 Butler team.

They disappointed in non-conf, won a weak Horizon tourney to make the Big Dance, then had 5 straight nailbiter wins to make the NCAA Championship game for the second straight year.

I’m legitimately more scared of our ILT opponent than any potential high-seed NCAA opponent.

Team working under arrangement with Development Office to assure the maturation of those 1746 Society pledges.

Someone questioned earlier in this thread when the spread got to 7 points if we could imagine beating anyone by 8 points. This team doesn’t seem to do that.

Our record against the spread must be 2-15.

DL - The half time score of the Black Tuesday game was 33-9.
Gokinsmen - The 2017 Princeton team went undefeated in the first year of the ILT so the semi-final and the championship game against Penn and Yale were the third meeting between those teams.
Eric von zip - Mitch did not play in that game. He graduated the year before.

Trentonian write-up with some good postgame quotes:

“Coach always says we’re winning no matter the situation,” Lee said. “He wasn’t saying that as much today, but we always think we are going to win."

Oops, you’re right. I didn’t go back far enough!

Mitch graduated in 1998. The Palestra game was played in February 1999.

I have the VCR tape of that game, lol. That’s how long ago it was!!

Columbia led for just over 38 minutes today. The game was tied for a little more than a minute, Princeton led 3 times for a total time of just under 50 seconds. While it didn’t seem the Tigers were getting any offensive rebounds in the first half, they ended up with 24 second chance points, versus 7 for Columbia. It was 57-38 with 7 minutes 46 seconds to go, Princeton outscored Columbia 33-10 the rest of the way.

But do you still own equipment that will play the tape?

WTF did I just watch on delay without peeking? Houdini, Rasputin, Lazarus, Batman–that was insane.

I almost–almost–wish they would have lost because the team is not learning its lesson about slow starts and playing with effort AND fundamentals on every possession. Small suggestion for MH–start the next game in scramble/pressure mode and tell the team that if they’re not up by at least 4 after the first two minutes they are going to be running gassers in practice the next day.

Lee and Pierce, despite their strong overall stats and heroics, had very tough days at the office, missing shots they usually make. Lee was completely discombobulated at the rim and that last missed FT looked like something I might toss up there (I stink). Pierce couldn’t squeeze the ball on numerous occasions and also struggled to put in layups. But they never quit and made tons of clutch plays down the stretch.

I’m not sure what playbook contains the stand-around-and watch offense to which we were subjected for large stretches of the game. In this case compounded by telegraphed and inaccurate passing (so many routine passes were slightly off, screwing up the timing and letting the defense get the upper hand). I had no problem with all the first-half trey attempts, as almost all of them were in rhythm and wide open. Gotta take those, but it would be nice to hit a few. And maybe get an OR or two.

The defensive improvement in the second half of the second half might be masked by the fact that Columbian scored 33 in the first half and 34 in the second. But the number of possessions had to be higher in the second half as the Tigers scrambled to catch up. Columbia runs very nice motion offense (at least in the two games I watched) and if you don’t mind your fundamentals they will get a lot of back doors, front doors, drives off curls, and open treys. They’ll miss more than they should of those good looks, but in the first half they were OK. PU’s rebounding effort was also weak for much of the game, although it turned around eventually.

I loved the clutch plays by Peters and Stanton when they were needed. The team is not going to win a title if only Lee and Pierce produce when it counts, although they won’t win it if those guys don’t produce either. Byriel kept them within shouting distance during the dismal first half. Hicke gave a little energy. At some point, Davis will break out offensively–maybe they could run some plays for him early in games. But his D was really good on some key possessions.

Still not sure what I just watched.

Love Stanton’s jump shot–beautiful elevation timing of the release.

Davis shot only 4 three-balls. I would love to see him get 6-8 per game. I think his accuracy would improve. At least I HOPE it would.

Peters can’t shoot if they don’t pass it to him. He drilled the 3 that put us up only because Xavian tried to force his way to the hoop, missed, rebounded, missed again and the swatted rebound was caught by Peters. Pierce was definitely the Player of the Game. Check all player stats. Need better ball movement and D from each player.

I just got back from the game and dinner out and I’m still in stunned disbelieve. There are no words. This team just does what it needs to do to win.

Some random thoughts: The first half was probably the Tiger’s worst half of the year, but they were getting good shots. The question was not if but when those were going to start dropping. The chemistry between X and Caden was off somehow today. X’s entry passes were too high and Cade’s hands turned to stone. When Stanton entered the game, I said to my wife, this kid is in the game for one reason and that’s to make a three. He did that --and so much more. The enthusiasm of his teammate’s after he hit the big shot seemed to energize the team to play at a higher level. Peters was HUGE today.

MikeK: I looked up this article, and you’re right: Princeton trailed 33-9 at the half in that game. To make it even scarier, Princeton was down 40-13 with 15:11 to go in the game. Penn managed just 9 points after that, and lost 50-49. Today’s game wasn’t exactly that extreme, but it was close. Here’s the link, and I think there might be a video online of that game if you dig hard enough: https://goprincetontigers.com/news/1999/11/18/736925

Yes, unbelievably we still have a working VCR! I have family movies that I’ve never converted.
