Pierce

Hearing some interesting stuff about his plans this season.

Do tell!!

the cliffhanger, oh my goodness

No doubt we’ll hear the big news in 2 weeks.

Or maybe not …

Was told by an insider that he might not use his senior year and play elsewhere after graduation. Trying to confirm. Other Ivy coaches don’t know one way or the other. Makes some sense. He is a $500,000 guy and would get his degree. If the Ivy abrogated the absurd no summer practice rule, we would know. 355 schools are practicing now.

Obviously hope that is not the case.

As an aside, this whole sport is getting ridiculous.

I have heard that scenario as well. His value could be much higher than 500k, but even at that number he could not be faulted for transferring. Sitting out may be due to the effects of the injury he suffered against Akron. He never really reached the level of play from a year ago. He’s got nothing to lose.

That would be devastating.

If in fact he has not fully recovered from the injury (about which we know next to nothing), sitting out may make perfect sense. If he plays and graduates, his only option to keep playing is for a lower salary in Europe than he would make here as a graduate transfer AND he could work toward a graduate degree.

Yes his loss would hurt us, but I suspect Mitch could cobble together a middle-of-the-pack team.

I get a guy doing what benefits himself, but overall what a ruined sport.

Injury recovery for Pierce in this matter seems doubtful as i see he is playing 3x3 ball this summer. Per official team website.

It appears the only workable strategy is to get on the proverbial payment bus.

Unless there’s a school willing to pay millions (plural), I don’t see how this is a good move for Pierce (whose family seems well-to-do already).

Due to injury, Caden had a very rough junior year - his stock is at an all-time low. Even fully healthy, he’s not the obviously flashy player that Lee is or a seven-footer like Wolf. He’s not gonna have nearly the same high usage on a power conference team that he would in the Ivy.

If Caden has professional dreams, the Tosan track seems better for him than the Xaivian track. Dominate the ball as a big fish in a small pond. Put up 20p/12r/4a for Princeton, not 8p/8r/2a for Illinois or Northwestern.

In his sophomore season, though, when all 3 were healthy, Caden was Ivy Player of the Year.

Deservedly so. But for mid/low major stars, there’s always the question of whether their skills will “translate” against more athletic foes. When you’re as quick and agile as Lee or a seven-footer who can shoot like Wolf, it’s easy to see them succeeding in the SEC/B10/B12.

Pierce is less of a physical talent than those two. He’s athletic for the Ivy but not for high majors and his size is average at best for a PF. Again, I love Caden and think he’s an elite college player but he’s not getting the NIL money and usage that Lee and Wolf will/did.

In some ways, Pierce may be a better fit in
a power conference. Both lee and Wolf need
the ball. Pierce proved as a freshman that he can thrive
as a complementary player–rebound, play defense
and hit an open shot. When he needed to play a bigger
role, he stepped up until the injury. I hope we keep him,
and thought he could be POY again. But if he can’t play
at 100% this year, can’t fault him for taking the money
somewhere else.

He is playing 3x3 this summer so injury recovery is not it. Money is if report is accurate.

yea i think one would need to be a orangutan to not see nba potential in danny wolf after say his 3rd game his sophomore year.
he was and is a unicorn.
and he’s likely now going firmly in round 1. so it’s a precedent lost on no one. and he made the right choice for him.

imagine an ivy leaguer going late lottery… which is a possibility for him. just amazing

Lee also has special skills. whether it translates well we’ll see. but logical he followed wolf’s path given his skills and a further parabolic blow out in nil funds.
just makes sense in Present value terms

pierce should maximize his personal NPV. therefore i agree it makes sense as nba optionality far less obvious for him as it was even after last year so be creative young man in assessing your options. and good luck

*for the record i hope he plays this year

Can’t fault the guy for trying to increase his basketball earnings while he still can. Hard for me to see him as a sought after high major guy with his size/tape last year.
